Seoul is the best to spend a couple of weekends. It’s good for young and people in their late twenties who want to be near shopping and night life. That’s the reason most of them don’t prefer to stay in Itaewon.
Some spend the night over the weekend in Seoul and stay at “찜질방” Jjim-jil-bang (A Korean styled Saunda). They are found everywhere and cost up to $7 (7000 WON) per night. One of the places is three stories underground and very close to the downtown districts/nightlife. It has four saunas, hot tubs, movie theatre, video game rooms, computer rooms and a cafeteria. These are extremely cheap and the only problem is that you are supposed to wear special clothes which they will supply to you and you have to sleep with hundreds of other people in a giant room on a foam mattress or pillow. But if you are comfortable with that, they are great! The rooms are very comfortable and quiet and there are actually a lot of families there. You won’t find any drunkards, but you can have alcohol.
There are either very few to no foreigners in these places. Foreigners have yet to understand what goes at these places. And sure they will love it because they are really clean and you can have a good nights rest there. I hear that they are gaining popularity in New York.
If you consider the price, Jimjilbangs are good. But if you have two persons you should try out a room at a yeogwan (여관) for 25,000-30,000W. You have your own room, bed, fridge, water, air conditioner, juice, etc. They are found all over Dongdaemun. There are some cheap yeogwans in the middle of little Russia. But you can get a yeogwan anywhere and take a cheap subway or cabs around Seoul. Some of the fun areas are Hongdae and Gangnam which are cheaper and you can have a fun time.
