Sometimes you just can’t go overland. And sometimes you just don’t want to.Avoid Weekends
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday see the fewest air passengers. You may get a cheaper fare and have some room to sleep.
Doing your flight research and booking late at night or during the middle of the week can also make a difference.
Bring your own booze
This works for all types of travel.
Keep your Eye on the Fare After Booking
Pay attention to the price changes of the fare you just booked, prices tend to drop. If this is the case, call and raise a stink. You’ll have to pay an additional fee of around $100 to change your ticket, but it may be worth it if the price of the fare has dropped significantly.
Fly on a Special Day
It is typical for major airlines to offer an upgrade on your birthday, anniversary, etc. You’ll have to show proof. If it’s not a special day, cry wolf and claim your grandmother just died. You probably won’t get very far… but you never know.
Fly on Holidays
Despite high fares when flying around holidays, flying on the holiday itself can save you a Merry Ho-Ho bundle.
Pray for a Crowded Flight
Often airlines will overbook flights and then cross their fingers that all the passengers don’t show. If all the passengers do show, however, then the airline is in between a rock and an angry mother of three who simply wants to get back home. The airline will be looking for volunteers to stay behind and take a later flight. For compensation, travelers can receive a free round trip ticket to use later, vouchers, upgrades, free booze, etc.
