Requirements for Effective Teaching

Motivating students is not all that teaching is about. Good teaching is about caring for your subject, having a passion for it, and conveying that passion to everyone. This will attract the attention of the students. Teaching is possible only when the teacher treats students as consumers of knowledge. Good teaching is about bridging the gap between theory and practice.

Teacher can be good givers only when they are willing to listen to the students’ problems and also bear in mind that a student and the class is not one and the same. Good teaching need not have a fixed agenda or a rigid style but should be flexible. It is about the creative balance between being an authoritarian dictator on the one hand and a pushover on the other

Good teaching is about style. It needs to be entertaining but that does not mean it should lack substance. A good teacher works the room and the entire students in it. The students have a feeling that they are conductors and the class is the orchestra, in which students play different instruments at varying proficiencies. Humor should necessarily be a part of teaching. Cracking jokes at your own expense, can remove differences and friction as well as create a more relaxed atmosphere.

Teaching is about caring, nurturing, and developing the students’ mind and their talents. Teaching should be supported by strong and visionary leadership. Team work, sharing and exchanging ideas etc should be a part of teaching to make it worthwhile. In one work teaching I all about having fun, experiencing pleasure and intrinsic rewards.
