Lifestyle of the KoreansThe traditional culture of Korea is historically shared by North Korea and South Korea. Koreans have a rich and a distinct culture of their own. Culture and Lifestyle is manifested mainly through their housing, architecture, costumes, beliefs, cuisines and so on.

Korean is the official language of the Korean’s. Modern Korean is exclusively written in the Hangul script. Koreans valued scholarship and rewarded education and the study of Chinese classic text. Koreans are people with a strong personality and a wonderful talent at creativity.

Sites of dwelling in Korea are traditionally selected using geomancy, which influences the shape of the building, the direction it faces and the material it is built of. A traditional Korean house is called ‘Hanok’. Traditional Korean houses can be structured into an inner wing and an outer wing . The inner wing normally consisted of a living room, a kitchen and a wooden-floored central hall. The inner wings are used by the farmers and the unaffordable lots where as the outer wings are constructed by the wealthy people.

Korean gardens are natural, simple, and unforced. They are known for drawing various birds, Playing chess, painting, resting etc . Korea gardens also often have ponds. The lotus pond is an important feature in the Korean garden.

Hanbok is the traditional Korean dress. The hanbok consists of a shirt and pants. It is often characterized by vibrant colors and simple lines without pockets. During the winter people wore cotton-wadded dresses and fur. Hanbok are classified according to their purposes: everyday dress, ceremonial dress and special dress. Ceremonial dresses are worn on formal occasions, including a child’s first birthday, a wedding or a funeral. Special dresses are made for purposes such as shamans, officials.

Korean cuisine is based on the traditional foods of Korea. Rice is the staple food of Korea. And the main crops are rice, barley and beans. Since Korea is a peninsula Fish and other seafood are also important. A number of Fermented recipes are also developed which can be divided into ceremonial foods and ritual foods.The colouring of the food and the ingredients of the recipes are matched with a balance of yin and yang. Korean cuisine is probably best known for kimchi.

The Korean government has been making efforts to upgrade living standards through vigorous reforms in education, housing, social welfare, and environment and science and technology.
