Children below 5 years are usually playful, they don’t prefer studying and getting them interested in books is rather difficult to cultivate. The mother tongue is a rather great influence on them and to impose a foreign language, English is not easy. The best method of teaching the language would be thematic units which organize a curriculum around “themes” that connect standards-based materials to learning contexts through games, songs, poems, chants, crafts, and other activities.
Teaching a language would include the basic kindergarten vocab such as numbers, calendar, weather, seasons, clothing, food, colors, feelings, family, community people, actions, animals, body parts. Most of the Children tend to stay away from memorizing sentence patterns, vocabulary, and grammatical terms hence fun ways of learning is to be included by involving games and other activities for them to practice vocab in a short time span. Since most of the Children do not like writing the appropriate way to make them write is narrating a story to them and then asking them to draw pictures related to the story, making them to write their names and small phrases like asking permissions etc.
Teaching kids should involve mostly naturalistic situations where the language can be taught to them by learning through the things that interest them. Sometimes the songs will also reinforce in them the basic sentence patterns and also would be a means for them to practice different tenses. With teaching songs to the Children, we can incorporate movements into the song which would help them to remember the words, especially as the movements relate to the words. We should try getting different recordings of the same songs that they are learning and play them when they are doing other quieter activities. You’ll find them singing along while doing an unrelated thing. Try writing the song on the whiteboard (or large piece of paper) and replace as many words as possible with simple pictures of the words. They tend to learn things only through repetition and their natural desire to learn to express themselves.
Other means of making them learn the language is through reading simplified fairy tales and make them repeat sentence patterns, so they can comprehend easily and books are a wonderful way to introduce vocabulary. The Learn to Read, Read to Learn series is excellent for beginner English. They use lots of everyday vocabulary and repeat the sentence patterns.
Teaching can be made more efficient by using flash cards to show the alphabets, numbers and lots of related alphabetic and numeric pictures that need to pasted in their class rooms where they can easily see them everyday. This can be very helpful for them to be able to recognize the alphabets or numbers. Another means of making the story telling interesting as well as getting them learn it is by telling them different stories every week however including repetitive sentence patterns.
