Public Schools vs. Private Schools

August 14, 2007 by

Asian GirlPublic schools are no longer as good as they used to be. Are public school jobs still out there? Every year the public school jobs are getting worse with salary of 2 million won, 14 days holiday per year and long hours of working. The hagwon (private schools) jobs are considered much better than public school jobs.

However, public school jobs are becoming more consistent, through SMOE (Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education), EPIK (English Program in Korea), and GEPIK (Gyeonggi English Program in Korea) . They may not be getting better – but they are not getting worse. Some people say an average public school job is more gratifying than an average hagwon- in terms of quality of life and professional development.

Besides, there are official vacation days, which increase slightly in the new contracts.
